I think what I find so difficult is that the first agent who kept my novel six months, looking at revisions, said the first draft was a "little overwritten (but just a bit)". So I redid it, paced it up, took out any extra baggage and sent it off to another who said it was "very overwritten and slow". It's so subjective and very difficult to determine what is fair and constructive comment, which can improve the book, and what is just one person's initial response which may have no merit.
I'll keep going because those people who have read my novel love it, and I love it, but it's disheartening. All the agents I have dealt with say I have potential, or talent or a distinctive voice - which given that I have been a journalist for 20 years feels like damning with faint praise.
Sigh.

Dear David Callinan

I read this paragraph about David

"Born into a family from Limerick in the west of Ireland, world traveled but now settled in the UK. Author of ‘Fortress Manhattan’ and ‘10 Minute Miracle’, I have two books coming out with Ocean House Press ‘Face Lift’ and ‘Bodyswitch’. I played in bands such as Urban Clearway and toured with the early Elton John trio, Rod Stewart and Billy Connolly. Years ago I wrote a Celtic rock musical starring Pierce Brosnan. I also edit magazines and still perform sometimes."

Along time ago I arrived here and left a comment. And now I've had a chance to look through your website and read a little more about you. MUst have been busy then. In any regard you've got a pretty impressive bio here.

To have (4) Semi Finals and three (3) Commended is a "HUGE" reward or "TALL STORY" I cannot comment on the songs because I have not heard them. I think thats why people open a myspace account. Your right it is a lot of commenting and it seems it works better for the established artists and it probably does but it seems to give others a chance to get some feed back and see what different people tell you. The odd time you'll get vaque comments back because of various reasons like people are busy with other things but sometimes your'll get a good following and it will give you a chance to see how your songs stands up against the opinions of others and some are pretty reputable and musical people. And it may shed some light on what you can improve when you compare them with songs that are high in ranking or to people particular tastes. I think thats a value in of it's self.
There are pros and cons. Thats the hard part.

Pretty impressive bio David. I think playing in though bands and having those incredible opportunities you learned something great but writing that song is a technique and skill that still takes some individual skills. In any event it's a great start and I wish you the best and perhaps one day David you will be a Finalist or winner. Great Contest!!!!

Cheers

Your Truly

Glad to hear you are still breathing. Don't stop for Christ's sake. Where is Liscannor Bay? What's your situation - any children, women, wives, concubines etc. Send more videos. Look at the one on this blog sung by Sean Tyrell.

I love this post. Rejection is just a reality of writers. I will admit the first few for me hurt like hell. But as I sent out more queries and realized that rejection is often nothing to do with the quality of my work, I began getting more comfortable with it.

We have to try to look at it from a publishers perspective. They have to accommodate their readers and markets because it's a risk for them to publish a new book. They are the ones who will be out of pocket if it tanks.

Part of my challenge is that I write gritty, uncomfortable, edgy fiction with a lot of alternative themes. I know I will never be in Oprah's book club or win a literary prize, but I also know that there is a market for my work and the readers I do have, enjoy it.

Great post. Thanks for writing this.
